Aim High at University of Connecticut
Located on the picturesque campus of the University of Connecticut (UConn), a top 20 public university in the United States, the UConn American English Language Institute (UCAELI) offers high quality, innovative English language courses and unique study courses to help international students reach their academic and/or professional goals with two main programs: College Preparatory Experience and General English.
General English is great for beginner to advanced students who want to focus on communication, reading, and writing in all contexts. It is designed for students who are not going to attend a college or university in the United States. UCAELI offers 5 levels of English courses, from Beginner to Advanced.
The College Preparatory Experience provides language courses and unique study courses that prepare students for academic success.

While you are learning English in the College Preparatory Experience at UCAELI, you will also be learning about American classroom culture, successful study strategies to excel in the American educational system, and how to find and use important university academic, cultural, and social resources. The College Preparatory program helps you increase your TOEFL or IELTS test scores and provides you with an important preview of college life in the United States. After successfully completing the College preparatory courses, you will be qualified and fully prepared academically, culturally, and socially to enter into full time study at a US university.
Conditional Admission
The College Preparatory Experience at UCAELI represents the collaboration between three universities: The University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University, and the University of Saint Joseph. Students are encouraged to apply for conditional admission into one of these three universities.
Language support is English courses for currently enrolled UConn students and scholars.

Conditional Admission requires students to earn a Proficiency Certificate in English for full acceptance. This means students can focus on skills they will need in the American classroom instead of memorizing and preparing for the TOEFL test. Students will learn how to:
- Write an academic paper
- Prepare effectively for a US test which requires analytical skills
- Learn to participate in a US discussion classroom with American classmates
Students taking General English courses will:
- Complete projects that are interesting and valuable to them
- Create a language learning portfolio
- Focus on reaching their language goals

- Guide students to organize academic work independently

Student Life at the University of Connecticut
While living and learning on campus, you will have 22 hours of English classes each week, including your choice of afternoon courses that are both educational and fun!
In your free time you can:
- Practice English by joining activities such as outdoor sports and games, shopping trips, ice skating & more
- Work out in the gym or use the swimming pool, racquetball courts, or climbing walls
- Attend concerts and other performances
- Go to one of our many sporting events – basketball games, soccer games, ice hockey games, baseball games – UConn has it all!
